BAND CLASSES


Electric guitar
We offer ensemble classes where students are put together in groups of minimum three persons + the instructor. The instruments are provided by the studio. It is a great opportunity for the beginners to learn their instrument in a fun way and develop the technique of playing alongside with strong musicianship skills by working in a band setting. It is also a good opportunity for the advanced players to develop their song arranging/writing skills, learn about their role in the band as an instrumentalist/vocalist, and gain the mecassary experience about the sound mixing and setup.

Drums Instruments available:
keyboard, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, drum kit, African and Latin hand percussion, caja, Chinese percussion, all traditional Chinese instruments (zheng, erhu, ruan, dizi, xiao, other), electric bass, cello, violin.

All ages and all levels are accepted. Students are grouped together according to their musical abilities.



CHINESE ENSEMBLE
Chinese music lessons focus on the elementary study of ethnic Chinese instruments such as the following:
  • Erhu (two-strings fiddle)
  • Zhong Ruan (medium-size moon guitar)
  • Da Ruan (large-size moon guitar)
  • Xiao (bamboo vertical flute)
  • Dizi (bamboo transverse flute)
  • Zheng (Chinese harp)
  • Qin Qin (four-strings lute)
  • Pipa (four-strings lute)
  • Sanxin (fretless plucked lute)
  • Yangqin (hammered zither)
  • Chinese percussion
While studying in the group students learn about the technique of playing one designated instrument or multiple instruments depending on one's interest and capabilities. All students learn the traditional Chinese repertoire, modern Chinese notation, different styles from various parts of China, and perform in-class together as an ensemble. The program is offered twice a year. Winter session takes place from January until May. Fall session takes place from September until December). JAZZ BAND
Students are placed together as a band. Each session involves playing together as an ensemble under the direction of an instructor, learning the technique of playing a designated instrument, the idioms of jazz performance including improvisation (modal, harmonic, melodic, motivic, free, collective, other), comping, being a responsive player, etc. Students also develop musicianship and, if interested, the skill of arranging and composing. The repertoire is based on jazz standards, also on original arrangements and compositions. The instruments can be provided in class and rented out although everyone is encouraged to have one of his/her own.


ROCK / POP BAND
Students are placed together in a group of at least three plus the instructor. Besides gaining the technical proficiency on the instrument each student gains experience of playing in a band, develops some important musicianship skills that enable him/her to play in a group. If interested students can bring their own material to try it during the lessons, also learn about song writing and composition. The general repertoire is chosen based on students' musical interest. PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE
Percussion ensemble focuses on study of specific instruments or various instruments and rhythms from around the world. This course is great not only for drummers and percussionists but also for other instrumentalists, especially classical soloist and classically trained pianists who do not posses much experience as ensemble players (very useful in accompanying). Students are learning the rhythmic language of music from around the world and develop their musicianship skills. The course is offered twice a year. CLASSICAL CHAMBER ENSEMBLE
Chamber ensemble students focus on exploring the repertoire written for their particular set of instruments. Historical context, style, interpretation, musicianship and performance practices will also be covered. Students will also learn to develop sensitivity towards the ensemble in order to give dynamic performances and at the same time have the members work as a cohesive whole. Interactive skills between performers may be further enhanced by improvising as a group in the spontaneous creation of compositionally sound pieces. Ensemble members are much welcome to bring to the lesson pieces they wish to study.
