PIANO LESSONS

Piano Lessons

Our studio focuses on the uniqueness of every student. Rather than assigning a generic curriculum to everyone, each student receives exceedingly focused instruction from the teacher. We design unique lesson plans for every individual tailored towards his or her needs. Students are encouraged to set goals for themselves, and with the teachers help achieve those goals.

Lesson structure and an excellent curriculum are also important for long-term growth and continual development that is complimented by the use of the RCM piano syllabus. This syllabus is a widely recognized standard through out Canada and North America and aids in the graduated learning of the many technical, theoretical and musical elements that form the foundation of a secure music education. Unfortunately many music schools stick too rigidly to such a syllabus without allowing the student to grow in their own directions. In our studio we recognize the importance of the RCM syllabus in forming a strong foundation, while being conscientious with the direction a student wants to go with music. Students are encouraged to listen to recordings, sight read through scores and make note of compositions they wish to learn both in the short and long term. Such pieces are not necessarily restricted to the grade books or the syllabus for that matter. This gives students greater insight and experience with repertoire planning and gives them an impetus to explore for themselves.

Improvisation is also included as part of lessons, where students learn to use compositional elements to form spontaneous musical creations. It is also used in the teaching of theory and technique. Having students improvise using scales, chords, rhythms, and various technical elements enhances the introduction of the new technique material. By allowing them to apply creativity towards technique they are given increased understanding of how such elements are incorporated in a real world musical context.

Our teachers have a great deal of knowledge in regard to the physical aspect of playing and how to properly use our bodies, otherwise known as technique. Proper technique is essential in ensuring ease of playing and avoidance of undue strain or injury. Students are thoroughly instructed and guided towards proper posture and movements. Our teachers also have great knowledge on techniques required for advanced repertoire and contemporary compositions.

Students are given many opportunities to participate in RCM exams, competitions and festivals. Such performances build confidence and give students goals to attain and a sense of accomplishment.
